Grammar, in plain words

Why 이거 and not just 이?

Korean has two words for "this": 이 goes in front of a noun, and 이거 stands on its own.

  • 이 책 — this book (이 + noun)
  • 이거 — this one (standing alone)
  • 이거 얼마예요? — this one, how much is it?

This is the kind of explanation we give in class: small, concrete, and immediately usable. Then you practise it out loud until it sticks.

One caution: these are polite forms (-요), which is what you want as a visitor or a new learner. Casual speech exists, but you will not need it on day one.

Hangul in five minutes

Korean is easier to read than you think

Hangul is built from a small number of shapes. Learn five vowels and you can already read a surprising amount.

ㅏ

a

Like the "a" in father — short and open.

ㅓ

eo

Between "uh" and "aw". Your mouth stays relaxed.

ㅗ

o

Rounded lips, like "o" in more.

ㅜ

u

Like "oo" in food, but shorter.

Vowels are only half the story — in class you'll pair them with consonants and read real words in the first session.
